Question

How do I remove partition from C & D drive?

Aug 21, 2013 3:20PM PDT

My computer has a partion that I don't want in there. How do I remove the partition so that all 149 GB are on the "C" drive? OR is this not a good idea and if not, why not? Your help is greatly appreciated. I am a novice computer person.

Answer
Why do you have both C and D drives?

Before deciding to remove a partition, ask yourself why it's there? On most recently issued/sold computers, the D drive is created to hold a "backup" image of your operating system in case you mess up the one on your C drive. Thus, the D drive is protection against your own (or the "computer's") mistakes.

If you are still determined to remove that partition, hunt around (using Google, Bing or Cnet Downloads) to find free partitioning software that will allow you to remove it.

Just remember, once it's gone, so is everything that was stored within that partition.

Why do you have both C and D Drives?

Thank you for your response.. I have decided to leave well enough alone!! I'll learn how to use the computer with both C & D drives intact and partitioned as they are. Thanks again for your help; much appreciated.

That might be too easy.

Did you already put anything on that d-drive yourself, or is it still empty?
Can you copy a small file to it?
If you right click on it and look at its properties: how big is it an how much of the space is free and how much used?

It might be a good idea to combine these two partitions. But indeed, just using it by putting stuff on it is an option also.

If there is no free space (not to be confused with bytes free on drives c and d!) then you can't create partitions.

Why not create a folder and put what you want there?

You gave no details of your setup. However, the OS itself can under "disk management" do what you want. You can also check what's on drive "D", if its empty you can merge it with drive C. However, as others have explained to you if may contain your restore/recovery OS s/w at least or yet other s/w. if the drive D really isn't that big to begin with, you should leave it alone, unless you want to merge that added storage area. I leave this open should you want to proceed further but only you explain the current details of your PC. Should your PC actually be a laptop, just leave it alone, IMO.
