How do I reload my iTunes music after hard drive failure?

Our hard drive failed so I bought a new one and reinstalled the software image. Now I want to install iTunes and recover all of the iTunes music that was backed up onto external storage. Is it just a matter of copying the music back to the iTunes Music Folder or is it more involved than that? If I copy the music over, will iTunes accept it?

But some make up yet another backup method that is untried.

Did you use any known method such as http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ITUNES+BACKUP ?
