How do I reinstall Windows 10?

Ok here goes. I'm a freelancer and one of my clients wanted me to encrypt my hard drive because security. Anyways they are a mac shop so they couldn't offer me any good advice on how to encrypt my computer because it was a windows machine.

I ended up using a freeware option that stalled halfway through. Long story short I broke my computer and had to boot up linux from a flash drive that my friend had. Any tips on how I get windows back? Ideally I'd like to keep the linux installation and just create a new partition so I can dual boot windows.

Every shop I've talked to wants to charge me like $150. I guess I don't need a windows key any more because it is in the computer somehow? Does that sound right?

Re: install Windows 10

In reply to: How do I reinstall Windows 10? tells all about (re)installing Windows 10. Indeed, you don't need a new key, since the current one is safely stored on a Microsoft server. Be sure to delete all partitions on the hard disk during the install (or before that if the installer doesn't ask), and don't give the new Windows partition the whole disk, but leave some space to install a dual-boot Linux later.

To encrypt the hard disk, use Bitlocker; it's standard in Windows 10 Pro. You might need to update from Home to Pro, but as a freelancer that's a business expense well worth the money.
However, be sure to always have an unencrypted backup of all data you don't want to lose!

I want to repeat the unencrypted backups are not optional today. As to security the backups are in some locked drawer or safe if need be.

And yes you'll want W10 Pro which can be upgraded to for about 100 bucks with Microsoft. It's a business expense too.
