How do I password protect my external HD

My external HD has personal financial information stored in it and I presently share a townhouse with 2 other people. I will be going away on vacation and was wondering if there is a software out there (preferably free) that allows me to password protect my external HD to prevent my roommates from snooping around my stuff.
