Question

How do I install soylatte on my PowerBook G4?

Oct 23, 2012 10:15PM PDT
SPECS
Operating System: OSX 10.5.8
Model Name: PowerBook G4 17"
Model Identifier: PowerBook5,7
Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Processor Speed: 1.67 GHz
Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.9.1f3

PROBLEM

I have a 17" PowerBook G4 laptop from 2005. It has served me well all these years, but it seems age has finally caught up with it. My flash is now too old to run properly, and some programs that I've bought can't even work because my Java is too old. I decided to solve this by getting a Leopard disk and replacing my now 7 year-old Tiger operating system with Leopard.

That worked, but the Java is still out of date and I can't install Java 1.6 because my laptop, obviously, isn't Intel. So, Soylatte it is. The problem is that installing soylatte is a complex programmer-type process. At least it is to me, since I didn't even know what the Terminal application was until a few days ago.

WHAT I'VE TRIED
I have tried to make a PATH to the soylatte that I downloaded, but I can't get TextEdit to open properly.

I go into the Terminal and I say this:
"open /Applications/TextEdit.app ~/.bash_profile"

TextEdit opens this file, but it's blank. So then I try saying this:
"/Users/myusername/Downloads/soylatte16-1.0.3/bin/java -jar /path/to/my/jar-file.jar"

But when I do that, it shows me this:
"-bash: /Users/myusername/Downloads/soylatte16-1.0.3/bin/java: Bad CPU type in executable"<div>

Now I am stuck. I can't think of anything else to try. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know there must be something I'm missing, since I'm not as tech savvy as I'd like to be.

(Oh, and because I'm not tech savvy, please let me know if I need to clarify any of the things I've described.)
</div>
Thank you very much for hearing my plight!

The problem is that my machine is a non Intel 32-bit machine. That's why I need Soylatte to work.
