Most "TVs" were odd affairs with composite video signals and almost all laptops didn't have such a signal so for those you had to buy adapters.

Remember you did not supply make, model or even if it was a HDTV so I have to use what you supplied and write "I would not bother with that."

My laptop has HDMI out and my TV has HDMI, and after updating the video driver (according to a Dell forum) I not only had video on the TV, but sound also.

But maybe your laptop and your TV don't make such a perfect match. You didn't tell.
