your BIOS is already set to read the RAM by SPD.

POSSIBLY, iy you took a little extra time to provide the information requested in the red text atop the text entry box, we could tell you how to get into the BIOS. Many use the DEL key.

The real secret is that the message on an early screen during the boot says "hit ???XXX to enter set up". Guess what, set up is what we all call BIOS.

Ain't computers great???

do you mean the red text above the subject title box on this forum website? If that is what you mean, I am sorry, because I thought I had put all the info needed on my "who is 3151jeff" page that might be needed.
I am not sure what other info that I could add to this, but if you could give me a idea I won't make the same mistake again.
so you think the ram setting is likely already set to auto and I can check by stopping the boot and the info will be there? just want to be sure. thanks

It is almost always set so that it will automatically recognize more RAM (as long as your system can handle it). The key used to access BIOS varies by model...check out this guide to find out what it is for you.

Hope this helps,
John

Thanks for the help guys. The bio's info is great. I will post to this string when the ram arrives and is installed. I scanned with ''www.crucial.com'' and the ram will work. My system can use up to 2048mb of ram.

Disconnect everything, vacuum out all the dust, inside and out (I vacuum because it is easy and I am an old electronics tech and electrical engineer and that is the way I have always done it) and stick the new memory card in place.

Hook it all back up and click Start then right click on My Computer.

Left click properties and it will tell you how much RAM is installed...probably 1 GB.
