Question

How do I get rid of unwanted Virgin Programs

Oct 22, 2011 11:32PM PDT

I recently moved from Virgin to BT, and now have "Virgin net broadband" and "Wireless manager" as redundant programs on my computer. "Add/remove programs" does not even see them, and I have tried "Revo uninstaller - hunter mode", which replies that there is no installation package found for either program. Virgin tech support say I can just delete the files, but I am nervous to do this without checking if someone more knowledgable than me would recommend such an old fashioned method! Your views please.

For more clarity, I would add the following additional information:- The programs are in my "All programs" list on the start button, and when I try to run them they do start, but as I have removed the Virgin modem, they are unable to do anything but start. They are also present in Windows Explorer, where there are probably about 100 or more files in folders called "Virgin net broadband" , "Virgin Broadband Wireless" and "Virgin Media", all of which have sub folders. In "Virgin Broadband Wireless" there are sub folders called "Microsoft.VC80.CRT" and " Microsoft.VC80.MFC", which would seem to me are not Virgin files, and may be used by some other process on my computer. Thus my reluctance to take Virgin's advice and just delete everything.

There could well be other files that are shared by more applications, but I don't have the expertise to spot them. Also In Windows Explorer there is a folder caller "Visual Route" in my program files. It does not come up on the "start button - all programs", so I have no way that I can find of running it. I have checked on the web, and it seems to be an ISP fault finder. Is this possibly also something from Virgin? And if I don't need it, how do I rid myself of it?

I think the problem with a normal uninstall is that there is no "Uninstall" files for any of the folders, and for some reason they don't appear in "add/remove programs". The three pathes to the redundantt programs are as follows. "C:\Program Files\Virgin Net Broadband\stdialup.exe" "C:\Program Files\Virgin Broadband Wireless\Wireless Manager.exe" "C:\Program Files\Virgin Broadband Wireless\Wireless Manager.exe.setup" When I point Revo uninstaller at the programs, I get the reply :- "No installation package found! Tip:Get more information for the application from the main window and try to uninstall manually! C:\Program files\Virgin Broadband wireless\wireless manager.exe" And a similar reply for the other programs.

Anyone out there know how to rid me of these turbulant programs?

If there's no "official" uninstall, just delete those 3 Virgin folders from Program Files. To feel comfortable about it, keep them in the Recycle bin for a month or so, until you're convinced that they aren't needed anymore indeed.

That Visual Route just seems to be some stand-alone diagnostic. Safe to delete also, but why care? It won't harm to have it.

Uninstall Virgin Software

Thanks Kees,

I'll try that. I am always just a bit nervous to delete files without knowing what associations they have, and then finding that the next time I switch on I get a blank screen!
