It is called the NOTIFICATION AREA

If they are there, they are being loaded, check either MSCONFIG/STARTUP tab or allprograms/starup to see if you have programs that you don't need are being loaded.
Scan for spyware also since some may be unwanted programs.
You can hide the ones you need loaded but don't want to look at.

Thanks, Larry

If I uncheck some of these programs will still be able to use them at any time when I need them?

Yes!

Many don't need to load, and when they do you are using resources unnecessarily (sp?). Simply click to launch when you need them.

Some should be left alone, so be sure that you don't want them loaded before unchecking.
