Question

how do I get rid of app advert taking up a third of screen

Feb 17, 2015 4:20AM PST

I turned on my Smart TV just now to see a series, and a third of the screen is white with the following text (translated from French):

my applications (0)
To add some applications, access the appshop:

(an icon of the appshop appears beneath this sentence).

Now, I just want to see my series, preferably on the whole screen. How did this da*m thing come up out of the blue - this is the first time - and how do I get rid of it. I don't want any applications, don't want to use any Smart stuff, just want to watch tv.

Answer
You may want to know about Samsung's PIA.

Because Samsung is viewing their TV as an advertising delivery system, there appears to be no way to opt out of just the advertisements. But this is the first I've heard of it taking up this much of the screen.

Now that you know, tell Samsung to cut it out.

To me, it seems you are in some menu to choose applications. Can you go back to the normal state?

I thought I might have accidentally hit some button, but looking at the remote, I did not see anything that could trigger that response. I tried several buttons like Tools and others but none of them were pertinent. I also turned the tv off and on again, turned the cable tuner off and on again. Nothing changed. Finally I just tried going down the channels manually and eventually got a whole picture on the tv again, then went back to my chosen channel and it was normal again - the white Apps screen was gone. For now. I wish I knew what caused it though. Now I don't know when it may come back and do not really know how to solve it. Bummer.

Are you using Smart Hub at all?

Here you write about channels which we don't need Smart Hub at all for that. We can turn all that off.

I would dearly love to turn all that off. I don't use Smart Hub and don't need or want it. How do I turn it all off, please?

Varies with the model but look for Autostart.

Thanks, I read it. But nowhere in my manual do I find the Autostart Smart Hub feature. Perhaps it doesn't pertain to this model TV.

Also, I did find a way to reset the Smart Hub, erasing any account information or saved details, but it requires inputting a 4 number PIN code, and I don't remember ever creating one in the first place. I tried the usual suspects (0000, and my usual 4 digit pin number) but they don't work. So I am stuck.

I can't check the manual either. ALL Samsungs to date have allowed me to turn off smart hub. Maybe the words change in some menu but since we don't know which TV I think you'll have to call Samsung to ask how.

Sorry, I thought I had included that info in my original post, but I see that I didn't. My tv is the following:

Samsung TV model UE50HU6900S type UE50HU6900

This is an UHD Smart model without 3D and with a 50 inch screen. I view it using a cable tv decoder provided by my ISP. My fiber optics connection includes TV service.

If you forget your PIN, you can reset it using the Samsung Smart Control. With the TV turned on, pressthe following buttons on the remote to reset the PIN to 0000: ; w RETURN v RETURN w RETURN. w is the Volume Up button. v is the Volume Down button. The button is on the left side of the remote. (I can't copy it all from manual)

I see it's Auto Start versus AutoStart

"You can configure the TV to automatically open the Home Screen when it turns on. Navigate to Smart Hub
> Home Screen Settings, and set Auto Start to Off."
