Resolved Question

How do I get passed GRUB???

Dec 13, 2011 8:47AM PST

This computer won't let me get past this GRUB screen. I've tried the command:
grub > setup (hd0,1) and (hd0,0) and when it looks, the message:
Checking if "boot/grub/stage1" exists....no
Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists....no

I don't know what other commands to try. I can't get past this screen. And this "Error 17: File not found" comes up when I try to either boot Windows Vista or Windows NT/2000/XP.

Does anyone have any suggestions???

Do you need GRUB?

Your post omitted what OS you wanted to boot. If Vista I might suggest fixing the boot area with EASYBCD (which is free.)

The computer has Vista. I'm trying to repair this computer for a coworker. I was told that I could use a Vista recovery disk.
Could that work to boot up the computer?

Only if that is for this machine.

When he mentioned GRUB it sounded as though the system may have been set up to dual or multi boot, that is/was the confusion for me plus not knowing the system mfgr or OS(s) involved set my mind to wandering about the possibilities. All the best, Phil

I got it!

I figured it out.

I created a bootable Vista recovery disc. Because GRUB was keeping me out, it lead me to believe that somehow the OS bootloader was messed up. So, I booted up the computer from the recovery disc, started it from safe mode with command prompt and used the command: "bootrec.exe /fixboot" to write a boot sector because GRUB had overwritten my Vista Loader. After that, it restarted without hitch.

Thanks for the answers, guys!
