How do I get my media players to stop dragging?

Jun 5, 2013 2:44AM PDT

My nephew uses my computer to play games online. Since he last used it, he "accidentally" downloaded some sort of virus. I have Malware bytes and Microsoft Security Essentials, and then I also looked up Hitman Pro and used that as well. Since then all my video/media players (VLC, Windows Media, and Intervideo WinCool including YouTube online just draaaaggggggggsss and then gives me about 15 seconds of okay playback then draaaggggggggssss again. Music files seem to play normally though. Should I check my RAM? I have a Dell dimension 3000 series, and am using a WinXP platform with the SP pack 3. I have 1 GB of RAM.

Also, I am looking to add to my RAM anyway so I can upgrade to Windows 8, but I thought I could do it myself, any suggestions for DIY tutorials on how to do it?

Since it's XP. Did you try the old DMA RESET?
Jun 5, 2013 2:48AM PDT

XP has a long standing bug in the IDE DMA that degrades the DMA mode but never resets. So we are supposed to know this?

MSFT is going to walk on this old bug but when you post, always supply the machine details or I can't tell if this applies.

2 links to follow. One about the reset, the next is Grif (or rather his advice as Grif can't be delivered over the internet as he's not using transporter technology!)
