how do i get my laptop to recognize my wireless card again?

unfortunately, i kept taking my wireless card out without safely disabling it. now when i put it back in my laptop is recognizing it as a ethernet controller, and wants to add hardware as such, instead of recognizing it as a wireless card.
how do i fix this?
