Resolved Question

How do I get Internet Explorer to work again?

Apr 26, 2014 7:34PM PDT

I'm running a fully updated copy of Windows 8.1 on a Dell Inspiron 660. Ever since the last Windows Update, IE doesn't work; the icon's still on the taskbar, but clicking on it causes it to glow and then go out without starting the browser. I don't use IE, but my wife does, and she would like it back. All my attempts to solve the issue have failed.

TIA, Paul

Things to try:
1. Run it from the command prompt and see if there is any message.
2. Look in event viewer for cues.
3. Undo the latest Windows updates. If ytou know which one gave the trouble hide it to prevent it from installing itself again.

...and all is fine again. What bothers me is that the update is classified by MS as "important". I guess I'll just have to see how important it really is! Wink

It was the event viewer that put me on the right track. Thanks again.

Paul, You're Right. The Large 8.1 Update Is Required, If...

...If you expect to get ANY additional security updates in the future, Windows 8 users are required to update to the most recent 880+ mb "Windows 8.1 Update". Read about it HERE Instead of running the update from "automatic updates" or using the Windows Update site, try downloading the full update to your desktop, then run it from there. After accessing the site, clicking on the "Download" button will list a handful of separate updates which must all be downloaded and run to complete the full update. Download all of the updates and try installing them one at a time, then restart the machine between updates. I've had to perform the procedure on one of our machines to prevent errors from occurring. After downloading each of the separate updates, install them in this order:

1. KB2919442
2. KB2919355
3. KB2932046
4. KB2937592
5. KB2938439
6. KB2934018

Windows 8.1 64 bit

Windows 8.1 32 bit
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42327

It should allow you to correctly use IE after running the update.

Hope this helps.

I read in a few blogs

where folks that can't use IE for some reason should check their anti virus program and "Allow" IE again.
Than it worked fine.

It might be worth a look

Have you tried System Restore?
Apr 27, 2014 2:30AM PDT

I'd try using System Restore to go back to a date prior to the beginning of the problem. If that didn't work, then I'd restore my system from my backup.

I have tried it many times.

I have tried it many times to restore the system back to previous date but facing some malware issues with Windows system restore. So now using Faronics Deep Freeze restoring software. http://www.faronics.com/products/deep-freeze/standard/ Good to have it. Simple and easy to manage.
