Office is not a free program, you have to buy it. Office 97 however has been unsupported for several years, and Windows XP will become unsupported in April, so you've got problems. There is a free pretty much compatible alternative, LibreOffice you can download from http://www.libreoffice.org . If I were you, I'd start making plans for a new computer.

Good luck.
I acquired a Dell Inspiron 1200 laptop from a friend and someone previously uninstalled MS Word. I tried to download MS Word from CNET downloads, but I get an error message that says "the software requires Microsoft .net framework 3.5". The instructions on the Microsoft website make no sense to me. I am using Windows XP, recently downloaded Internet Explorer 8 (the previous IE was uninstalled). I don't have the original CDs that came with the laptop; hope to have them mailed to me shortly.
Also I have (don't laugh) Microsoft Office 97. I was thinking maybe if I downloaded that version I could upgrade by downloading the "updates" found on CNET.
Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. Stumped.
