How do I enlarge a logical drive?

Jun 20, 2010 2:57PM PDT

So once September rolls around I'd have had this laptop for a year now. (link complete with system specs) From when I got this thing it's had 3 logical drives: primary one being Local Disk (CHappy of course. Then HP_RECOVERY (DHappy and HP_TOOLS (FHappy

The problem I have is that HP_RECOVERY is only 10GB large and I'll need, just maybe, a little more than that to backup all the system files. I got 160GB hardrive and currently the Local Disk has "45.2 GB free of 138 GB" I would like to know how I can make HP_RECOVERY larger without losing everything. Which would really suck since I can't actually back up much in the first place...oh and (DHappy is empty as possible right now.

I wouldn't touch that.

That HP_Recovery partition is likely where all the files are if you ever needed to 'Reinstall' back to factory condition. Messing with that will likely remove any option to do that.

In addition, I would suggest that "Backing up" to a partition on the same hard drive as where the OS is installed is not really a backup. If the drive fails, (they do), then you not only lose the OS but all of your backup files.

Much better to have a different backup plan where the files can be stored safely away from the computer.

Different computer suppliers have different methods, but generally nowadays most computer suppliers recommend you create your own "Recovery" CD/DVD disks as soon as you get the machine up and running.

My Packard Bell laptop offered a utility in the Start Menu for just such, and stepped me through creating my own recovery disk and drivers disk. I did that immediately.

Have you done that? We often find that users don't see that option then call in here seeking help when their systems fail.
