How do I determine if my HP drivers are up to date?

by Jay845 / March 1, 2007 12:01 PM PST

I bought a HP 6110ca laptop approximately 6 weeks ago. I have had some issues with it and have had it sent to HP for repair. I have received it and have taken some advice from the forums in trying to reduce the risks of viruses, spyware etc by utlizing approriate software and firefox. I am now in the process of trying to ensure all my drivers our up to date. Is there anyway to determine which drivers I need to download from HP? I was looking for something similar to Windows update on the site but can't seem to find it. My fear is that I may accidently download a driver that is older than one currently on my laptop.

Thanks for your help

Device Manager is in the "System" control panel

In XP click on Start > Control Panel > System.
Click "Hardware" tab.
Click "Device Manager" button.

To see the currently installed driver for a particular device, double click on the device to bring up its Properties window and then click the Driver tab. The driver version and date should be listed there.

Some devices are common and have been used in computers for years. The drivers installed during the XP installation process are proper for many of these. The drivers listed for your model on the HP website are usually the drivers that the XP CD doesn't include or are those with updates. Compare the version number and date of the driver listed on to the version number and date of the driver on your computer.

Note that Windows Update itself will check your drivers to see if it knows of a newer driver for any of your hardware components. This method of updating drivers does an OK job; however, it does not always provide the best driver for a particular hardware component.
