how do i delete those unwanted "start up " programs?

by preppystud / February 27, 2006 2:01 PM PST

it seems that i have lots of unwanted programs added to my start up menu. they are hidden, i can't seem to delete them directly.

my laptop has 512 ddr2 sdram, but it still is overloaded. it happened tonight, that it restarted instantly when it rebooted.

for example, i have quicktime installed which starts automatcially everytime the computer starts.

anyway, this has been happening quite often. it restarts automatically, it will have this blue screen, with lots of words, then it restarts. i think that the laptop is overloaded, so it has no more memory. so it had torestart.

how can i solve that problem?

If you want to try it yourself

and see what the Startup tab of the System Configuration Utility holds, goto Start > Run, type in ''msconfig'', (without the quotes), and click OK.

Click the Startup tab and investigate each entry; eg, if you find Quicktime there, remove the tick. Anything else you don't want to load on startup you can investigate each in Google, and if it is safe to remove, take the tick out.

Click, Apply, then OK. You will get a warning message that the computer must be restarted before the changes take effect.

When you do restart the computer, and Windows loads, you will get an information window stating you have chosen Selective Startup. You can suppress this window from showing on each startup from within the window.

I hope this helps.

Removing Unnecessary Start Up Programs & Services
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / February 28, 2006 6:26 AM PST

For Windows 2000/XP, ignore the first couple of sentences about checking "resources" and the "Performance" tab in the link below but follow the rest of the procedures including the "Services" links at the bottom.

How To Shut Down Unnecessary Start Up Programs

Because the links for the "Services" are no longer functioning in the link above, use this one:

Services Guide For Windows XP

Hope this helps.
