Today, with LCD displays being the norm, not a good idea.

What you discover is that while we can change the resolutions in Windows, any time we use a non-native resolution it gets fuzzy. So to solve that we have to get the LCD with the aspect ratio that we wanted.

Or go find some old CRT!

Right click an empty place of the desktop to get the properties. Find the tab where you can change the resolution (usually with a slider). Most likely, as Bob writes, you won't like the result.
