Let's say you want to change your yahoo.com address. Most folk want to keep all their email and settings but as you discover, there is no feature to do that.

With each email provider you discover such changes are not supported.

With my ISP, I can add a second, third, fourth email address that all come in the same inbox as my primary email address. But gmail, hotmail and yahoo don't support that.

So all I can say:
1. It depends.
2. Read the FAQ, see the settings page of your subscription or ask Customer Service.
