Question

How do I add a 1000Mbps Switch to a Cisco WIFI Router?

Jul 21, 2015 8:15AM PDT

I have a Cisco DPC2325 that connects to a cable internet and provides Wifi connection. I'd like a more stable and fast wired network. Im thinking of buying an 8-port switch to network my TV, Mac, PC's, printers and a NAS. The cisco does not have a WAN port only 4 x 100Mbps ethernet ports. Can I just attach a switch to one of the ports in the cisco for LAN and internet connectivity?

I read somewhere that I have to disable DHCP how and where do I do that if I even need to?

Thanks for your help!

It's as simple as that.

As to DHCP we only do that when using a router as a switch.

Yep, yer good. Your DHCP addresses will feed through your switch.

I think what Proffitt was about to say is if you get a home INET router you'll probably run into problems.
All over-the-counter INET routers I've seen will not translate private addresses across the WAN port if the WAN side is a private IP address.

I was a little confused so I looked up your gateway.
Its a channelized tap off the main fiber which requires a DOCSIS gateway into it.
DOCSIS is just another physical MAC layer protocol for into 2020. Kinda like DSL on steroids or DQDB, Sonet, etc.
