Let's calculate it:

HDTV = 1920x1080 = 2.073 MP. So one pixel on the TV represents 5 pixels
of the original 10 MP and 8 pixels of the original 16 MP.
So I think
the picture quality on the screen depends on the quality of the
algorithm that packs the 'average' of 5 or 8 pixels into 1 pixel on your
screen. Nothing better than comparing it yourself.
The size of the TV in inches is totally irrelevant.
