Question

How disable FN key?

Mar 6, 2016 10:31AM PST

Hi:

My OS is windows 10.

I just replace my old keyboard. The problem with the new keyboard is I need to press the FN button + the function key (like volume up and down) before the function key will work. On my old keyboard the functions could be performed by only pressing the function key. There was no need to also press FN.

Is there a way to disable the FN key so I can go back to one button function key operations?

Thanks

Answer
This varies with the PC.

Some do that, some don't. As I don't see the make and model I can't tell you if it does or where.

Hp setup utility

Thanks for the research. You have the correct model.

But I went into HP set-up utility by pressing F10. There's no "system configuration". I searched and couldn't find an "action mode keys" command.

All the instruction refer to a laptops and notebooks. I have a Desktop all-in-one. Is it possible that the action mode keys can't be enabled or disabled on desktops?

The strange thing is my last 2 keyboards worked with this computer and there was no need to press FN to get the action keys to work.
Why would this keyboard work differently with the same computer?

Thanks

Why this keyboard...
Mar 7, 2016 2:59PM PST

Because the keyboard is standard in the PC world. How the PC responds to keys is in the BIOS and OS so if this model doesn't have the feature to swap the Fn+Fkeys, well it doesn't. I thought it might be worth a try to look around other HP models in hopes they duplicated the feature but alas, a dead end.

Now there is something odd in your post. You claim other keyboards worked. My response is to go get the exact same keyboard that worked before.

Sometimes the functions have

multiple fuinctions. A example F5 typically means to refresh the screen (in Windows) but if you hold the function (typically pressing the function key+Fx is specific to the computerOEM) and the F5 it could increase the volume.
