1. Try the network troubleshooter in the help. It will help you to check every setting, service and protocol involved.
2. Try system restore (Win XP) or scanreg /restore (Win 98), if you've can go back to a version that worked that way.
3. Try uninstalling and reinstalling and reconfiguring everything you did a few days ago. If it worked then, and you started from scratch, it should work now also.
4. If Internet works fine on both machines (my idea: you've got a router connected with 2 PC's, correct me if I'm very wrong) the hardware and drivers for the NIC should be OK. Which is a positive point.

Have you added any new software such as possibly a firewall? (NT)

That's a good question.

Zonealarm would certainly show an alert on the 'target' computer (don't know other firewalls) and moreover, the member says "haven't messed with ... anything".

But, indeed, people don't remember half of what they do, or might think it an insignificant detail, not worth mentioning. And not relate the alert with their problem, even if they see it.

Does the XP firewall block LAN traffic by default? And would it show up on the XP network troubleshooter?

Maybe your dad (understandably?) has given you read-only access?

I didn't look at your pictures, but that's one of things you can setup while configuring a share. Again, I recommend the network troubleshooter.
Or it might be settings of his firewall. If necessary, try the effect of disabling it.

And I don't understand what you mean with 'main broadband router'. From the point of view of the router, all connected computers are equivalent (no difference between port 1,2,3,4.

Hope this helps.
