How can someone know my IP Address

by Blazin65 / December 27, 2009 1:52 AM PST

I'm confused or surprised by something. I have ZoneAlarm Extreme Sucurity installed on my computer. I have the firewall turned on to my knowledge.

So how is it that I can go to any number of websites and they can tell me the IP address of my computer? They don't state my street address, but they can name the IP address and city and state. I thought if I had a firewall installed that this was not possible. Is this something to be concerned about? Is the product I have installed a failure? Is an IP address specific to the whole city, or is it my exact location?

Even in this forum, the IP you are at is logged. Don't freak out but go read more about how the internet works. For information to be sent back to your machine it has to reveal the return address.

Nothing about a firewall is at play here. That is for other issues.

And don't go "hiding my IP" as the scammers that want to sell you such are ... scammers.

You're right, there is a lot to read about how the internet works and about IP addresses.

As Bob stated, read up on how the net works. If you want to be anonymous, look into software designed for that purpose, one is called STEGANOS,hides, (they say) your IP address and uses considerable resources in doing so.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
