Question

How can I update a Panasonic laptop from IDE to SATA?

Apr 16, 2015 7:39PM PDT

I have a really good working Panasonic Toughbook laptop. I want to convert it from IDE drive to SATA drive. Any help would be appreciated.

Unless you are able to find another motherboard that fits in the case and comes with drivers for all Panasonic stuff that you don't replace, it's a nogo.

They do not fit into laptops due to space constraints. If the drive is still good, can I ask why change this? There would be no speed increase.

To R. Profitt regarding your reply "If the drive is still good, can I ask why change this? There would be no speed increase". My experience with Sata SSD drives is that they are cooler running and FASTER. Why would I not want to make that change? Panasonic Toughbook, model CF-Y7 running Windows XP. It is of the opinion of the Medical EMT I have spoken to that Windows XP works very well for this laptop, no excessive size for the OS.

I can use my experience with an old Acer ter-600. I changed the IDE to a newer model and it got a speed bump and a cooler HDD. It was not the IDE to SATA that made these areas better.

Hello R. Proffitt
You said in your reply "I can use my experience with an old Acer ter-600. I changed the IDE to a newer model and it got a speed bump and a cooler HDD. It was not the IDE to SATA that made these areas better".

What DID make those areas better?

Thank you

1. The new IDE drive was faster.

2. The new IDE drive was running cooler.

From this personal experience I can write that the 2 things you are after might be attainable.

Hello R. Proffitt... This afternoon I came across an old HP 17" laptop (mine) that was designed with space for 2 IDE drives. I will try to convert to SSD using the extra space to accommodate the IDE to SSD converter.
