Question

How can i transfer info from my Dimension E521 hard drive?

by Rickko / August 16, 2011 12:49 AM PDT

I had a Dimension E521 that gave me a Keyboard error that seemed to be a motherboard issue. I scrapped the computer but before that I removed the Hard Drive. Now I need to know how I can transfer all of the data that i had stored onto another drive. I have an external 1tb drive that I can put all of the data on, I'm just lost on how to go about it. Any help will be greatly appreciated as I have a ton of photos and music stored on the hard drive that I would hate to loose. Data recover places want an arm & a leg (and a kidney) to recover all of my data, so I'm hoping that my CNET family can help. HELP!

Why not do this the way most folk do?

You take the old drive and place it in some USB drive enclosure.

Then you plug it in and copy out your files.

Sounds simple enough, but I'll be copying the data to a laptop. Does that make a difference? And what kinda cables would I need, SATA or IDE?

I'm going with no.

As to SATA or IDE you can type the model number of the drive into google to figure that out. Then off to amazon.com or newegg.com to get a matching enclosure.

If you need forum members to give an exact match, supply the details and I see them pitch in.

Placing a drive into an enclosure is not much harder than removing a drive from an old machine.

Bob, how can I thank you? I went to Newegg and purchased an enclosure and I have just extracted all of my data from my old hard drive. What would people like me do without people like you.

You just did!

Thanks for the report.

Now that you know about this you are ready to suggest it to the next person when you see them in the same predicament.

And it's a lot cheaper than a service counter or data recovery services.

PLUS you now have a spare copy of your files!
Bob

PS. I'm thinking you got at least 3 bonuses from doing this.
1. Learned something.
2. Saved your files.
3. Now have a spare copy.
(there's more.)
