How can I tell whether 1394 port is working?

Apr 9, 2006 6:25AM PDT

I just located an ADS Pyro A/V Link device that plugs into a 1394 ochi port.

From Windows device manager I find the 1394 and that it is enabled and "working".

When I put the 6 pin 1394 cable into both ADS and PC nothing happens. Should it beep like USB devices do? Is there a software way to test that the port is working fine?

I have sent e-mail to ADS for help but probably won't get until later in the week.

Thanks,
RON C

Sorry, no beep here.

But if I run WINDV (google.com) I can transfer video from my camcorder.

Can you see your camcorder in Device manager?

Can you see your camcorder in Device manager? In theory it should show as Imaging Devcie.

Sorry, it will be a few days till I try this.

I'll tell you when I get the camcorder back from the kids.

For now, go get WINDV since it's small, free, doesn't need an install and will just work if it's all proper.

One more clue.
Apr 9, 2006 10:25AM PDT

My camcorder connects to the firewire port. The exact ADS device may be something other than a camcorder so WINDV would not be useful.

Details sure would help. That is, what camcorder, how it's connected and the ADS model.

Ahh, not a camcorder setup. Windv is not usable.

You'll have to use ADS's software.

I think that the A/V Link is supposed to emulate a DV cam.
Apr 10, 2006 12:25AM PDT

The device will except a 4 wire 1394 from a DV camcorder for input or output.

I'm waiting on ADS to respond.

Thanks for your help.

That's a nutty idea...

If I had a firewire connected camera, what would I need the ADS box for?

-> Just FYI, I've used too many of those 50 buck Hauppaugge and ATI TV/Capture cards over the years to digitize video on a PC. The quality is about as good as it gets.

In closing, does the ADS software work?

ADS has no software but depends on WinXP.
Apr 10, 2006 4:51AM PDT

ADS device has no software but depends on WinXP and a porgram like Premiere etc. to get the video in.

If I had a firewire connected camera, what would I need the ADS box for? I just telling what is in the manual. It also says that analog (VCR) to DV camera.

Are you saying the PCI/AGP cards are good as I have an extra PCI slot or could change video cards.

I chose the ADS because a friend has one that seems to be fine - too bad he's 1500 miles away.

Another angle.

What's missing in these posts or I missed it are the host machine specs. Sometimes we see an AMD chipset and the owner needs to install motherboard drivers to get such a device working.

Does Adobe Premiere work?

"Are you saying the PCI/AGP cards are good as I have an extra PCI slot or could change video cards."

I don't change the video card but add the ATI or Hauppauge TV/Capture card. The digitizer is no better or worse than anything else I've seen.

I usually attach PC info within message but forgot.

Premiere works fine for everything other than Importing DV.
