The only logical way I know is to download:

My thought on this.

1. Splice it with the software that came with the camera.

2. To get the final output ready for the iPad, use HANDBRAKE to convert it.

*HANDBRAKE is free and found with a search engine.

What I did first

Thank you for the inputs. Based on the answer that said to use the camera software to splice the individual avi files, I tried that first. The Canon ZommBrowser EX software that came with the camera was able to splice the avi's. I had to read the manual and try to find the process. It was not easy or obvious but I was able to do it. The resulting file could be saved as avi(JPEG) or an MOV file. I saved it as MOV then transfered the mov file to a network drive. On the iPad I opened the MOV on the network drive using Safari and after playing around with it, it finally played.
When I have more time I will try the other suggestions to see if they are any better.
