How Can I Shrink A JPEG Image?

Feb 21, 2004 7:51AM PST

Hello, I have some JPEG images that I would like to put on a Antique forum but it will only accept small images 10KB and all the images I want to put on are well above that amount, I was wondering if anyone here could explain how to "shink" a image down to that size if at all that is possible, I would really appreciate any help I can recieve on this, thank you in advance...

What happens when you right click on the JPEG and choose to resize the picture?

Open photo
Right click on it
Click Copy
Open a new Word document
Press Ctrl+V keys at the same time
Left click on photo and little squares appear at each corner; position mouse pointer on one of the tiny squares, and drag into the center of photo to change size.

Or purchase some form of photo editing software.

Michael, I don't know where you see a resize feature when you right click on a jpeg I couldn't...also I wanted to put this on a website/forum as a picture not a open up type file...anyway I found a way on google search, this one web downsized it for me into a large 9,000kb thumbnail that worked perfect...thanks for your input, I appreciated this forum and all the valuable info everyone contributes here, thanks and take care....

Raddman

Here is how you do that with the FREE Irfanview viewer program:

http://www.irfanview.com

After you install the program:

File - Open
navigate to the photo you want...lets call it horse.jpg for this example.

Highlight horse.jpg click OK

At the bottom of the window you will see the size of the jpg in pixels and kb (640 x 480 150kb/450kb)
The first kb is the file size (150kb).

In the width box, change the width to the one you desire (say 200 for this exercise).
Click OK.

Click File - Save As
change the name to horse200
navigate to where you want to store the file.
now
LOOK down and find the "Options" button.
Click Options
You will find a quality slider that goes from 0 to 100.
Move the slider to 50 and click OK.

Click File - Open
Highlight horse200.jpg
Click OK

Look to the bottom of the window and find the new photo and file size.

If the file size is not small enough, do another "Save As" - Options button and move the quality slider even lower.
