I tried to change the style in Normal.dotx (or is it Normal.dotm) and wound up with default Word page that has a small rectngular box outlined with small dashes. How do I get back to the original? None of the Microsoft help pages seem useful.

I am not sure what file I should rename. If i simply rename Doc1, close it and restart Word, I get the same changed Docx file again.
That normal.dot file. Rename or delete and Word will create a new one.

Thanks for trying, but your recipe didn't work for me. A friend more expert than I am came over and helped me ou of the bind.
After changing it to your wishes, be sure to include it in your regular backup. It's one of those files that are easily forgotten!

Thanks for your advice, But...
I cannot get rid of the small annoying text box, which I would like to do before changing to a new format.
I am now starting Word documents from a docx file I set up on my desktop, but this is cumbersome. I'd like to get back to starting from the taskbar icon. What next?
You have that docx, why not edit your dotm?
