As far, as I know, you can't. You can change the user name in Control Panel (from OWNER to MICHAEL, for example, but the filename for the profile in Users stays OWNER).
You have to make a new user and transfer all data, then delete the old user. Kind of annoying. I hope I'm wrong.

If you mean user account, Kees hit it pretty spot on. There is no method for doing this short of creating a new account and migrating what data you can. If you mean some other kind of profile, you'll need to be more specific.

I've seen folk find a power tool to rename some user's home folder then complain of the bricks falling on their head.

Do this the right way.
