How can I remove a watermark?

Aug 18, 2006 4:47PM PDT

I would like to remove a watermark, or at least make it less obnoxious, from a couple of photos I found on the Internet. I don't want to use them commercially - just as my primary image (kind of like an avatar) on a social networking site.

Is there a (preferrably freeware) tool or process I can use to do this? I assume it can be done in Photoshop but I don't have it and besides, I'm a graphics idiot.

Here's a link to one of the photos:

Thanks in advance.

The only way to remove it:

Use PhotoShop

More specifically?

Assuming I could get a hold of a copy of Photoshop, how exactly would I go about doing this?

The more detail you can provide the better.

Thanks.

When you are intent on ripping off someone else's image,
Aug 19, 2006 11:30PM PDT

don't expect a lot of help. Watermarks are put into an image to prevent people like you from ripping it off.

BTW, you're going to buy Photoshop to do this? Uh-huh.

Judgement

Perhaps, in the strictest sense, I am 'ripping off' the image since I would like to modify it from the state in which I found it. However, as I said, and I did so truthfully, I would be using it as an avatar, not for commercial or any other purpose. Fair enough.

However, your insinuation that I would steal a commercially sold product to do something like this is offensive. I do have friends that own copies of Photoshop and I would ask them to let me use it on their machines, or have one of them help me.

why would anyone think you would hesitate to take still another's? It doesn't matter how you're going to use the images. You don't have any right to them. You want to know how to steal them.

To remove the watermark would be time consuming for someone with a great deal of PhotoShop knowledge.

My knowledge of PhotoShop is not that extensive.

Photoshop substitute?

Borrowing images is a common activity on the net... but still obviously frowned upon. Rather than biting your head off let me just say this... the CNET forum policies stress that discussion of pirating of any sort is grounds for banning. You've been fairly honest about your intentions I believe, so I'm giving you this tip...

Try downloading the Gimp for PC ....

or ">http://www.download.com/The-GIMP/3000-2197_4-10495810.html?tag=lst-0-1] the Gimp for mac...

...for an image manipulation program that is powerful and free.

"Borrowing" images is one thing. Removing copyright,

watermarks, etc. is quite another. It's interesting that you don't take it seriously Grim.

... So I do take it seriously. I don't know any artist making their living from message board avatars though.

But it comes down to this really... you can yell at someone, or you can try to teach them.

I explained that borrowing as aekaki_21 was asking about is considered piracy.

I explained that asking about such activity was against forum policy.

I gave aekaki_21 a free choice of photo editing programs, thus giving them a reason not to rip off a copy of Photoshop.

Did I tell aekaki_21 how to do what they were asking about? No? Did I break any forum rules or explain how to remove a water mark? No?

Bottom line, KP, is that this forum is not SE... start throwing an attitude at me here and I will complain to the mods every time. You answer the way you wish to and I will answer the way I think is appropriate.

I thought you were a student? You are a professional

photographer? If so, you need to pay attention. The ASMP is quite concerned about changes in copyright being discussed by Congress. The discussion is that images where the owner cannot readily be identified will lose their copyright protection. That means that yahoos who strip copyright and watermarks from web based images will be one means by which the owner loses his or her image.

It appears that you are OK with assisting such people. I wouldn't talk too much about that if I were you. You might quickly become very unpopular in the professional community.

Artists put copyrights and watermarks in their work to keep them from being ripped off. If you find serious artists or photographers who don't mind people using their images after stripping out these protections, let me know. I'm always open to some free art.

Complain all you like Grim. If you offer advice like this, I will express my opinion about it. You can then take it up with the mods.

I'm also a realist. People borrow images all the time. Telling someone it is wrong is appropriate and that was done by both you and I. Do you think ranting about it will stop someone who still intends to steal the image?

Now... you also raised the issue of "stealing" a copy of photoshop. I gave an alternative to stealing. How am I wrong here?

Just because I didn't treat aekaki_21 the way you want me to is gonna be an issue with you? I noticed that Snapshot2 (who happens to be a mod) didn't rant the way you are. Where is the vitriol for them? No, your just gonna rant at me about this. Why me?

I reiterate... Did I tell aekaki_21 how to do what they were asking about? No? Did I break any forum rules or explain how to remove a water mark? No?

Lets make it clear for everyone reading this, KP, why your taking this issue up with me. You don't like me and I can't mention what I think of you. I quit reading your posts in SE to avoid just this kind of conflict. Now your chasing me through other forums? I find this childish at best. If I have broke some forum rule or if I gave inappropriate information to aekaki_21 then please be clear how... otherwise IMO your just trying to pick a fight.
