How can I move Outlook mail and contacts from old computer?

Jul 9, 2010 8:37AM PDT

I just bought a new computer. Old=Dell Inspiron running XP New=Toshiba Satellite running Win7.

Moving files, docs and software was no problem, but I can't figure out how to synch Outlook on my new computer with Outlook on my old computer. I want the new computer to have the mail and contacts currently on the old one.

Details might be different depending on the version of Outlook you have on the old system. Can you tell?

I find
http://www.adminspy.com/Windows-Tips/Outlook-configurations-and-file-locations.html
and
http://www.iclub.nl/article.php?story=20081031153041266
to have useful information on where Outlook 2003 stores all its data. That's a good start to get it.

By the way, did you try Microsofts own Windows Easy Transfer program. I don't exclude at all it's smart enough to know ALL about Microsofts own Outlook data.
http://www.google.com/search?q=moving+data+xp+windows+7 seems to give quite a few useful hits.

You might need to use a 2-step transfer:
1. From Outlook 2003 on XP to Outlook 2003 in Windows 7
2. From Outlook 2003 in Windows 7 to Outlook 2007 in Windows 7
I expect Easy Transfer to do at least step #1. And maybe step #2 isn't necessary at all.

Can you tell your experiences?

Kees
