Question

How can I install 10.2.8 on FW800 external HD ?

Apr 13, 2012 7:03PM PDT

I installed OS X 10.5.8 on one partition of my OWC Firewire 800 external hard drive with no problem. I want to install 10.2.8 on a different partition. When the installer gets to the page asking where I want to install it, It doesn't show the external hard drive as a location to install. Does anybody know if and how I can get the OS 10.2.8 on the external hard drive? PLEASE & THANK YOU !

How did you partition the drive?
Did you make the partition Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
Is the Partition Map configured as Apple?
Does the external drive show up at all during the installation process?

What is the computer model, and what year, is the computer you are trying to use?

There could be a problem trying to install such an old OS onto a Machine that is not capable of supporting it.

?? Install Mac OS 10.2.8 on FW800 external HD ??
Apr 14, 2012 12:00PM PDT

Hi mrmacfixit... thanks for your reply. It's an OWC 1TB ext drive connected to my 2003 Power Mac G4 (mirror drive doors) with Firewire 800. The 1TB is partitioned equally into 4 volumes, as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Apple partition map. I'm normally running 10.5.8, and had no problem installing that on one partition of the ext HD. The only reason I want 10.2.8 on the ext HD is that I'm still using Photoshop 7, which still does everything I need from Photoshop. I have 10.2.8 installed on one partition of a Seagate 250 GB internal HD, which was no problem. So, the Mac hardware has no problem with either version of the OS. When attempting to install the 10.2.8 from the original OS CD, the external HD doesn't show up at all as an install location (not reading Firewire as a HD location??). It shows all of the 2 internal HD's partitions. With the 10.5.8 install, it shows the external drive partitions also. I would like to have the Photoshop on 2 different HDs, but it looks like there's a problem. That version of Photoshop won't run on the newer 10.5.8 OS. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.
