how can I get rid of cable tv

Would like to just subscribe to high speed internet and basic tv service and get movies and other channels over the net

Then you would need high speed adsl or glass fiber. Then, once that is up and running, just cancel your cable subscription. What's keeping you from doing it?

But I get the impression the OP thinks his cable company doesn't offer subscriptions to just basic TV and high speed Internet. He should know better then we do, since he can go to their site and see what possibilities they have or contact their customer service.

but it might trigger the cable rep to go into "customer retention" mode and offer a more friendly subscription rate.
