Question

How Can I Fix This Incredibly Strange Issue On My Laptop?

Jul 28, 2018 4:28PM PDT

I got a second hand Lenovo y510p( i7-4700mq, 16gbs RAM, Dual GeForce GT 755m SLI) laptop recently and reinstalled windows 10 pro on it because it was stuck in a boot loop after I attempted to factory reset it but I forgot to put the charger in and the battery died in the middle of it.( I have no idea if this issue affected the Laptop before I reinstalled the OS because I instantly tried to reset it once I got it) After using it for 30 minutes the screen goes black and it completely shuts off as if the battery had been pulled out. This happens every time at exactly 30 minutes. I have no idea what might be causing this so any help with the matter would be appreciated. The problem is definitely not heat related and it even happens in the BIOS. I tried updating the BIOS but that didn't help, I tried resetting the RAM but that didn't work and I also tried cleaning out the fans just in case it was a heat related issue (Even though I'm almost 100% sure it isn't) but that didn't help. I am completely out of ideas so any help would be tremendously appreciated.

Answer
Small world. I own a dual sli y510p too.

I found it to be an annoying laptop as soon as I used the dual GPU the noise was a big much. Also the supplied HDD conked out just months in. Since it was the usual Seagate I replaced that and disabled the second GPU. I have a drive tray for the second GPU so that is how that will be configured soon.

If it happens in the BIOS my bet is on heat as mine demanded that I keep up with 1st of the month good canned air cleaning. Removing the second GPU helped a lot too.

Nice enough machine but the keyboard wore out fast along with the drive failure I moved it to a backup machine.

Probably not heat related

I'm pretty sure it's not heat related because it seem to happen no matter what temperature the laptop is. Also I have cleaned out my graphics cards but to no avail. I'm completely stumped with this. I've never experienced an issue like this with a laptop. Its very strange. The laptop seems pretty good so I'm hoping I can fix it instead of having to get a refund.

You have the option for a refund? Go for it.

Because of the PWM used on the LCD I wish I had not bought mine 5 YEARS ago.

Are you dealing with used gear? They haven't sold this for years and as you know, old gaming laptops are things you have to treat with deep suspect. If they don't work right, go for refund. Really. I mean this.

-> Again, I own this model. Would not have bought it after the experiences and the PWM LCD issues.

PS. Maybe you didn't catch my advice above?

1. Go ahead and unplug the second GPU.
2. Go ahead and give it a good cleaning with the canned air.

-> NO! I continue to see units that are not too high in heat but still failing because the parts have degraded and now fail at lower temperatures. This sorely confused folk new to repair. I'm just someone that owned repair shops so it's a common thing to hear "it's not heat." If it's not then the news is you need a new board(s.)

There are things to try but given I own this model, I have some strong feelings about this one. Don't buy!

I'm quite fond of this laptop

Hmm... I'm considering taking your advice but I'm quite fond of this laptop. It seems like it will get the job done. Also I don't see how it could be heat related when I happens after exactly 30 minutes every single time regardless of the temperature. It even happens in the BIOS.

Given your comment about return.

If the seller can't fix this granted unusual problem, it's just not worth it.

And the next thing I would try would void a return option since we have to go inside. Try a new CMOS battery and while inside, use the canned air. I've had techs that didn't clean as they go and we had to let them pursue new opportunities.

PS. I forgot to add.

Since this is an odd issue, my only choice is to change things around (pull 2nd GPU, change battery, clean) to see if it has any effect. I've had techs that sit there, do nothing and nothing changes. I wish that had more time to spend teaching those techs but if they don't get with the program you have to let them go. Here, I have the luxury of sharing decades of repair shop stories. Whether they are used or not is up to those that read them.
