Resolved Question

How can I Convince dad I'm ready for a large investment

Aug 20, 2016 4:28AM PDT

So I'll just cut to the chase, 16, have a job, break honours in school, but have a bit of a communication gap between my father and myself. I'm buying a new "gaming" laptop, and after loads of research I've come to a product at $1500 CAN that I'm truly happy with. The laptop would mostly be used for school, games, programming, photo editing, and CAD work. The only problem is my dad, he doesn't think I should spend so much on one thing. I've told him why including a good graphics card (960m, good for what I'm using it for) an SSD, 16gb DDR4 RAM, a good processor and the lot. My dad isn't exactly the understanding nor the type to understand technology. Just wondering if anyone can share knowledge on how to convince him that I know what I'm doing and this is a good investment.

Remember, the Mods here have been through the ropes regarding this issue.
Show the make and model of the laptop you wish to buy.
I can pretty much guarantee that if this laptop is some 17 inch desktop replacement with short battery life ,they will not recommend this for carrying to school .

While I can't tell you what he did to get it or give you a Dad insight, it was less than 1K USD.

It's this one. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01578ZKPO/

After it arrived we cloned the drive to the 500GB SSD for 99USD. You may be overpaying for the SSD?

The laptop I'm looking at is a 15 inch with okay battery life. Here is a Canadian link https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B01A6ZAT4U/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1471715306&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=msi+ge62+6qd-274us+apache+pro&dpPl=1&dpID=410ZkhJ5iTL&ref=plSrch But I'm unable to find an American model sorry. Another reason I'm looking st this laptop is I can buy it locally. The reason I feel wary about buying expensive tech online including the laptop you've linked is how sketchy it looks. With a page out together by someone who doesn't know what they're talking about ie. "1000 gb harddrive" when everyone knows a Tb is 1028 gb.

Odd to write sketchy.

My son bought it, it's working great. Not only that but I was impressed enough to replace my laptop with the next model up.

As to your 1000 gb question, drive makers use a decimal notation. Some new to PC folk want it to mean 1024 and in your case you want it to be 1028. That new to PC feeling wears off fast enough.

Dad is just thinking of computer for school work...and you are thinking school work and game. As far as price is concern for this computer, it's not too bad.
