Question

How can I access outlook offline.

Oct 14, 2013 9:53PM PDT

Firstly let me tell you that I am a silver surfer with IT skill around minus 100 on the scale !!!
I have recently purchased an Acer Aspire running Windows 8 and use Outlook as may email facility.
My previous laptop ran on Vista and I was able to see my email folders and work on them offline when no network was available - I could prepare email drafts and save them for sending when connected.
I do not seem to be able to do this now.
My email connection reads "https://dub111.mail.live.com/default.aspx?n=581110067&fid=1"
Is there a kind person out there who can give me a detailed line by line, step by step, action by action guide which would solve my problem ?
I have tried various forums and Windows Help but they do not give me sufficient assistance.

Thanks in anticipation of your helpful replies

MikeS

Clarification Request
I'm afraid we need some more details
Oct 14, 2013 10:10PM PDT

First, when you say Outlook, do you mean the online outlook.com or the Outlook that's in MS Office? And are you trying to access Outlook in Metro (aka Modern) mode or desktop mode? I have a Windows 8 system that can access both Office Outlook and outlook.com in desktop mode, but I avoid the Metro mode stuff like the plague!

Clarification

Thank you for your response.
As an example of my lack of IT skill - I do not know which Outlook facility I use.
Can you explain how I can find this information ?
As you have Windows 8 and use both .com and office, would it be possible to give details of the settings for both and I would then try and work through them to see if I can get a result.
I have never heard of the Metro mode so am only interested in the desktop option.
I apologise for my ignorance but hope you can help further.

Thanks

The metro mode is new look of Windows with all those squares ('tiles') on the screen that you click on to get into an 'app' (as you see in all ads like http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/tablets-computers). One of those apps is the mail app.

The desktop mode looks is what you had in Windows XP and Vista and 7 with all those icons on the screen and a start button at lower left corner (except there's no start button anymore in Windows Cool. To go into the desktop click on the 'go to desktop' tile on metro start screen.

Now please tell us exactly how you come into your mail from the screen you see after you turn on the machine and logged in (that's the screen with all those tiles). Don't tell your username and password you type to get into your mail, nor your email address, but we need to know the last part of it, like @gmail.com or @o2.co.uk.

Outlook
Oct 16, 2013 8:50PM PDT

Hi Kees,
This is my full step by step of how I get email :
1. Switch on - the what you call " Metro" screen appears.
2. On the left from top to bottom are Mail, Date, People, Maps, Desktop icons .
3. I click on Desktop which takes me to the screen with all my folders and shortcuts on.
4. My normal procedure is to click on my Orange.co.uk icon - "@gavway.freeserve.co.uk" which opens the Orange/EE website and I open the Check your email button. I then look at and delete the spam mail.
I only use this facility for filtering spam before it gets to my Outlook mail site - I sometimes report phishing from this email facility.
5. I find this option easier to use than the "Orange" mail. I then click on what I have described as "Outlook" which takes me straight into an email facility which I use for all other email contact with friends and relatives etc. The URL for this is as detailed in my original post.
I find this email option easier to use than the "Orange" mail.

I hope there is sufficient information here to help you to solve my problem.

MikeS

Ps : In response to your next post - the procedure on my old laptop was very similar to above but I can not remember the second stage email facility .

Exactly what steps do you do to get to email?

If you have the MS Office Outlook, you wouldn't go on the Internet. If you use online Outlook, you'd go into a browser like Internet Explorer with an address of something like http://www.outlook.com . Look at the title bar in the upper left corner of whichever one you get into and tell us which one it says you're in.

That links doesn't work, because it jumps to Microsoft account login page.

Just two questions:
- What e-mail program do you use now?
- What e-mail program did you use in Vista?

Note there's no such thing as "Outlook". There's the program MS Outlook, part of the MS Office suite. And there's the website outlook.com. And those are very different things, since a website isn't a program.

Hello Kees,

Thanks for your response.
Could you please look at my reply to the previous responder which will give you a further insight into my ignorance on these matters.
First question - I have a shortcut icon on my desktop which has "Outlook" written underneath it.
Second question - on my old Vista laptop I used the Orange webmail facility.

My new Acer/Windows 8 laptop was set up by an acquaintance who I no longer have contact with so I can not ask him.

I also have the Orange webmail facility on my new laptop which I tend to use as a sort of filter to stop spam getting to my "Outlook" email .

I realise this is probably not very helpful to you but is the best I can offer.

Should I put my laptop back in the box and sellit ?? (lol)

Re: shortcut icon

Ok, so your acquaintance made that shortcut icon and called it Outlook. Now right click on it, go to the properties and tell us what it says in "target".
The one I made for myself says ""C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\OUTLOOK.EXE" /safe". What's yours?

More questions:
- Do you have an @orange.com e-mail address?
- Why not use the same "Orange webmail facility" (whatever that is) as you used to do. You say you can access it? Why that switch to Outlook?
