Hotmail account in Outlook Express?

Nov 11, 2005 8:49AM PST

I am assuming that I can no longer get to my Hotmail through my OE. Is that correct?

The last hotmail that showed up in OE is dated 10/21/05, so up to that date I could get to my Hotmail through my OE. I presume some kind of change took place at that time.

I see a lot of stuff on Google, and in the Communications forum, about Hotmail and OE, but I don't understand it.

I have XP. I'm not sure what other info I should post.

thank you, grandpaw

Re: Hotmail and OE

Grandpaw,

Rather strange. You did need a paid hotmail account for this for a long time before October 21 already, and if you have it should still work.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];878462 tells about the paid hotmail account.

Detailed instructions for hotmail access in OE:
http://email.about.com/cs/oetipstricks/qt/et041202.htm
or using an intermediate program called freepops:
http://email.about.com/od/outlookexpresstips/qt/et061405.htm (no need for this, I assume)
Also instructive:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/mailserver.mspx

Hope this helps and let us know.

Still won't work
Nov 12, 2005 2:18AM PST

I removed the Hotmail account from OE. Restarted. Set up a hotmail account once again using the instructions Kees cited. I got the messages asking if I wanted to download hotmail folders. Nothing happened. (All the Hotmail folders are already in OE because of my previous Hotmail account in OE). I went Tools>Synchronize all. The resulting screen flashed by so quickly that I couldn't tell what it said, but it didn't move the most recent Hotmail Inbox messages to OE.

I do have a paid Hotmail Premium account.

I have written to Hotmail and it's even possible that it will answer some day, and possibly even provide relevant information and a solution. But at my age, I don't want to count on it.

What should I do now? I actually don't open my OE account very much because I do all my email business in the Hotmail account. But I do go there some, as when I wnat to archive some hotmail emails in OE.

where angels fear to tread
Nov 12, 2005 11:13PM PST

I'm afraid this is getting too complicated to expect anyone to deal with it, but I'll still provide the info:

I just noticed is that when I open OE, the title says Outlook Express powered by ATT. I used to connect via ATT dialup but got rid of that some time back, and now use Comcast. I have XP with SP2, which I understand includes OE6. I don't know if that means anything or not.

I just went through some gyrations and I'm not sure I am remembering what all happened but I'll do the best I can.

When I have been in OE and went Tools>Synchronize All, the OE message that should have told me synchronizing was taking place would flash across the screen so fast that I couldn't read any of it.

When I tried to send a hotmail while in OE, I got an error message reading "Outlook Express has encountered a problem and needs to close". It provides a place to send MS a report, which I did.

When I tried to send the same email again, I got the OE report that sending the message, and checking Hotmail for messages, both failed.

The details for not being able to send were: an unknown error has occurred: Account "Hotmail" Server. http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp. Protocol HTTPMail Server Response "Redirect to partner. Port 0, Secure (SSL) No. Error Number 0x80004005.

The details for not being able to poll Hotmail for new messages was: Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. with the rest of the message being identical to the first message.

Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly at what point this happened, but all of my Hotmail folders have disappeared from OE. They remained there when I removed Hotmail as an OE account, which surprised me. but disappeared when I was performing the business of trying to send a Hotmail via OE.

And when I opened OE to find those folders had disappeared, there was a Log on - Hotmail message asking me to provide my Hotmail Username and password and showing the Logon Server as http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp . When I submitted that, I got a message advising that OE had no Hotmail folders and asking if I wanted to see a list of them, to which I answered yes. I then got a Downloading Folders From Hotmail progress message showing them being downloading. But that went on for some time without finishing, and then I got a second OE message, while the progress message was still running, stating that an unknown error had occurred.

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Wrong HTTP server!
Nov 13, 2005 12:17AM PST

MSN no longer uses http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp. as it's http hotmail server.

Older versions of XP still have this obsolete address in their registry's default MSN hotmail address entry for Outlook Express. Even a small error during an application program installation on an upgraded-to-SP2 computer can cause an Outlook settings default.

You need to edit your Outlook mail account settings and re-enter the new MSN hotmail server address for Outlook which is:

http://oe.msn.msnmail.hotmail.com/cgi-bin/hmdata

You must also re-enter your hotmail account personal data, ...password, etc..

Can't enter new server address
Nov 13, 2005 12:56AM PST

trublubush, after removing Hotmail account from OE, I go to set it up again. But when I get to the E-Mail Server Names I find that the old, incorrect server name is in the box and is grayed out so that I cannot change it. Do you know of a way I can get around that? grandpaw

P.S. I am grateful for your reply. Hopefully, this will lead to a solution and I will be able to leave my padded cell.

A question
Nov 13, 2005 1:13AM PST

OLEXP: How to Configure Outlook Express to Use a Hotmail Account at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;220852
says the server name is the original one I entered, the one that is grayed out. I am wondering why it says that when you say it is a different one. Is it possible that you are thinking about Outlook and that it deals with things differently? grandpaw

Strange!
Nov 13, 2005 1:34AM PST

I opened the page on the link you posted. I don't what to tell you except that they've listed the wrong server address. This I know because I use hotmail with OE myself! The address I gave you was given to me by an MSN tech and it works just fine!!

Setting up new account?
Nov 13, 2005 1:25AM PST

Grandpaw, what steps are you using to re-establish your hotmail account? Are you using Outlook's 'Internet Accounts' manager? Are you using the 'New connection' wizard? How did you remove your hotmail account?

If your existing(and faulty) account has been properly removed, the box should not be grayed-out.

Try this:
Open Outlook Express and click on 'Tools'. On the pull-down menu, select 'Accounts...'. When the 'Internet Accounts' window appears, select the 'Mail' tab. What do you see?

Removing and reestablishing Hotmail in OE
Nov 13, 2005 1:58AM PST

Covenant, I have been removing the Hotmail account by going to Tools>Accounts, clicking on the Hotmail account and then clicking the Remove button.

I have been reestablishing the Hotmail account by again going to Tools>Accounts, hitting the Add button, then the Mail button and getting the forms for setting up the new account.

I am wondering if there is another way to remove the Hotmail account that might solve the problem of having that old server address there in grayed out form.

Mystery?!
Nov 13, 2005 2:15AM PST

Try selecting whatever appears on the Tools>Accounts>'Mail' tab window...(hopefully, "Hotmail") and then click the'Properties' button. This should allow you to edit the existing settings. You shouldn't really have to use the 'Connection' wizard unless your internet connection is messed up. BTW are you using broadband or dial-up? This makes a big difference!

Still doesn't work
Nov 13, 2005 3:18AM PST

I was able to enter your new server url by doing as you suggested and going to hotmail properties in OE and deleting the old URL and entering the new one. But I still can't get OE to retrieve my Hotmail. After I made the server change, I went to Tools>Synchronization All and got the same kind of error message I had been getting with the old URL except showing the new one instead of the old one. That is:
Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server
Account "Hotmail" Server. http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp. Protocol HTTPMail Server Response "Redirect to partner. Port 0, Secure (SSL) No. Error Number 0x80CCC3.

Boy, I appreciate your staying with this this long, but I don't want to keep you unduly. I'm going to eat now.

SOLVED
Nov 13, 2005 9:56PM PST

The last Hotmail to show up in OE was dated Oct. 21. So I used System Restore to go back to Oct 19 and OE now shows all my Hotmail.

I have a couple of questions related to this use of System Restore which are of a general nature so that I am asking them in a post in the Virus area.

Thanks, Covenant, for sticking with me.

Sorry about that, trublubush
