Hot topics have changed?

Dec 19, 2006 11:43PM PST

Hi, mods:

Apologies if this has been addressed, but I took a look through most of the newer threads, and didn't see it mentioned. It looks to me like the list of "hot topics" on each category's landing page (i.e., cell phones, desktops, etc), now features the threads with the most posts lifetime, not recently.

Is that an intentional change? If so, I'm curious as to why. I found the previous method of using levels of current activity to define a thread as "hot" far more useful. What purpose does it serve to have old and bloated -- in some cases locked -- threads listed among the "hot topics"?

Thanks,

tbenzinger

Okay, so it's a mistake and is being worked on?

Thanks for the reply!

???

Yeah, what's going on with this? It's not terribly useful to have ancient topics locked in place instead of dynamic "hot" topics. Why is this taking so long to fix?

Respectfully curious,

Agreed it isn't useful

And the engineers are working on fix for this, among other outstanding bugs... some bugs are simple to fix and some aren't and this is one of the more difficult ones.

We apologize for this inconvenience.

Thanks for the response, Lee... I figured it would get taken care of once people returned from vacation.

So this glitch was reported two weeks ago? Is there progress being made? I enjoy checking the true "hot topics" when I'm browsing the forums... is that coming back soon??

Just to be clear

The "Hot discussions" from the CNET forum directory page is working just fine. It is the "Hot discussions" from CNET Reviews category pages that are out of date.

Here is an example:

Go to this page:
http://reviews.cnet.com/Desktops/2001-3118_7-0.html

And scroll to the subsection that reads "Hot discussions" notice that the discussion being pulled are from 2004 and 2005.

Is this what you are referring to? If so that is being worked on.

Thanks!

Yup, the review pages are what I've been looking at. Thanks for the reply, and for clearing things up here.

Hot topics?
Jan 15, 2007 10:54PM PST

I just noticed this problem (hot topics on the reviews pages), and came here to post about it... only to see that it was reported over a month ago??

Is there a timeframe to fix this? It's difficult to follow the most interesting discussions without that nice and easy hot topics list.

There were some priority bugs that needed attending

to, but as soon as those are resolved the engineer will get to it.

Thanks for bring this up again. I don't have an ETA but I assure you that this is on their radar for fixing.

Well, this really is dragging on, isn't it?

Thanks for staying on top of this, Lee. I guess some of us miss our Hot Topics!

strange
Jan 21, 2007 11:27PM PST

On Friday, I thought I saw the hot topics return to normal... but now they're screwed up again?

Does this mean the problem is actively being addressed?

it was fixed, but they had to roll the fix back because of

some other issues. Engineers are working on this actively as you can see it worked for a little bit.

Keep your fingers cross I think they almost have it.

Thanks for your patience while we work through this.
