Hosts file question?

by Jake Barnes / April 11, 2005 12:20 PM PDT

I want to add the MVPS hosts files to the existing hosts file I have (primarily from Spybot) - how do you add this file to the existing hosts?

open both files in NOTEPAD (they are simple text files) and copy everything BELOW the local host line from one file to the other (pasting it in at the end of the file).

The localhost lines to look for are near the top of the file and will show as either: localhost

or as localhost

depending on how the file is set up (large ones often use the as it can be quicker).

Once you open the files you should have no problem figuring it out.

Shouldn't be an issue to merge now the MVPS HOSTS File Jake

As long as we are aware that such entries are false positive we can simply uncheck it from SSD before hitting fix.

If SSD flagged a HOSTS entry and is pointing to that is likely a false positive. Always confirm by checking SSD Official forum or here in Cnet V&SA Happy

If SSD is flagging a HOSTS entry that is pointing to other IP address (not or IP that is known to user), that is the time we will worry of maybe HOSTS hijacking (e.g. HOSTS entry installed by CWS variant)

Darn it ...

I used hoster to append the MVPS hosts file to my existing file ... seems it blocks several important graphics/titles from my start page "My Way" (most important, The Market Snapshot) - it would take me forever to find the offending lines - so I'm not gonna use the MVPS list.

Use Hoster to put back the default HOSTS file.
Open Spybot S&D to add Spybot S&D HOSTS again.
You're done, MVPS HOSTS gone.

Just wish I could get a better hosts file to add to Spybots without fouling up my start page.

Fixed the hosts file ...

found the troublesome file names (propertites) and placed an # in front of the description after the address ... now all the titles and graphics show ... was just one particular grouping ... but made me cross-eyed looking for them ...
