Hosting a Wiki

Jan 26, 2006 9:43PM PST

I was looking to start a Wiki of my own to test its usefulness before pushing to start one at my office. I was wondering if there are any hosting services available that would allow me to host a wiki.

What the heck is a wiki and why are you interested in it/them?

Answering both questions...

First, a Wiki is a simple online database that's easy for multiple people to add to, and edit, from around the world. Think of the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia

Now, to answer the original question, you don't need one...you can actually use your own computer to get the job done. Just click here for the steps, and the free software you'll need. If you would still like to use a web host, just do a general web search for ones that start as low as $5/month. (I don't have any recommendations, though someone else might.)

Hope this helps,
John

Another Question

the reason I am concerned about starting it on my own computer is I wasn't sure how many people could access it at the same time with my cable internet conection.

Depends...

That really depends on the size of the page, your upload/download speed, and if your cable company places restrictions of the connection. If you get enough people accessing the site at one time it can get mighty slow, and you may be contacted by your cable company concerning the increased bandwidth. Thus, if you're expecting a lot of traffic I'd suggest contacting them first to see what they have to say.

There is a wiki hosting service (aka wiki farm) at http://www.editthis.info

You just give it a name and press submit.

Hope this helps,
Rob
