Hoping someone can help with Mozilla problem....

Jan 23, 2005 10:55AM PST

Hello, all! Yet another newbie here that loves Mozilla, but has a problem...with Yahoo!, that is. First, some history: I deleted the MS VM and replaced it with Sun's latest. Then (a week later), I ditched IE for Mozilla Firefox.

Here's where the problem comes in: In Yahoo! alone, when I attempt to move an email to another folder or reply to an email, the tab(s) don't work...the button highlights when I click on it, but no drop-down menu appears. All I can do with my Yahoo! email is to report as Spam or delete it.

Can anyone walk me through how to fix this? A friend fluent in HTML said he couldn't find anything wrong with the code, for what that's worth.

THANKS!! Chuck cmk59@myway.com (for now)

Chuck, You 'Ditched' Internet Explorer?
Jan 24, 2005 2:12AM PST

Did you remove entirely or did you simply make Firefox the default? If Internet Explorer is still on the machine, does it correctly use the Yahoo mail?

You said you "deleted" Microsoft VM?? How did you do that? It's not uninstallable through Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs.

Which operating system are you using?

Hope this helps and let us know more.

"Ditching, etc"
Jan 24, 2005 8:19AM PST

Hello, Grif!

The system I'm using is WIN XP Pro, with all the most current updates.

What I did was to make Mozilla the default, and uninstall IE. Everything worked well in IE, but I wanted the security Firefox offered.

In addition, I downloaded and installed the newest Sun Java (at a different time), per their instructions. That's what I assumed the VM was..the Java application, hence my description of "removal" of the VM...I had to uninstall the MS version to install the Sun Java. (Can you tell I'm not entirely a 'techie'?)

Anyway, neither Sun, Mozilla or Yahoo! can/will answer my question about the non-working tabs, after two weeks of trying. I'm just about at the stage where I'm to give up on Yahoo! entirely, or just live with IE again.

A final question: have also decided to use Thunderbird as my email program, but cannot figure out how to use my Yahoo! account...something about the "smtp" address; I don't know what that is, nor how to configure it to work...I keep getting messages that Yahoo! cannot communicate.

Thanks, Chuck

Yahoo and Mozilla...
Jan 24, 2005 7:46PM PST

are not compatable! You can use Yahoo! mail, but not through Outlook, Thunderbird etc. It is web mail and you can only use plain text in any Mozilla browser.
Yahoo! needs IE if you wish to format your font, size, color and smileys. Yahoo! mail and POP3 don't mix so forget using Thunderbird with itHappy

That explains and verifies a lot. C'est la vie, Yahoo!

Mozilla Problem...
Jan 25, 2005 5:34AM PST

Chuck,
I also use Firefox. If you don't need Yahoo, stay away from IE whenever possible. In my case I do use IE on occasion, as I have two mail plus accounts with Yahoo. My wife likes to write the Grandchildren and use the smileys etc. I also have a couple accounts that I pay bills, and they require IE, I have some other accounts that will accept Firefox. Since I use IE, I have plenty of security to at least help keep me safe. The main thing is to have a good firewall, and a good AV program. I use Zone Alarm (Free) firewall, AVG 7.0, SpywareBlaster (blocker) Keeps the bad guys out. Also Spybot, AdAware, CW Shredder, Housecall, (online scan from Trend Micro) There are many other good programs to choose from, so far I have had very good luck with my setup.
Good Luck.

Chuck, I Have No Problems With Firefox and Yahoo Mail
Jan 25, 2005 6:20AM PST

With Firefox 1.0 and Internet Explorer 6 SP2 on Windows XP SP2, I have no problems accessing the Yahoo Mail site and opening, sending, moving, replying, or anything else.

In regards to "uninstalling" Internet Explorer, as I mentioned before, you probably haven't actually "uninstalled" it. Even if you went into Add/Remove Windows Components and UNCHECKED the "Internet Explorer" box, it doesn't uninstall the program. Because IE is an integral part of Windows XP, unchecking that option only makes the program inaccessible from the Start Menu..It's not uninstalled.

Another issue...You do not have to uninstall the Microsoft VM in order to install the Sun version of Java and since it's extremely difficult to uninstall the Microsoft VM, you probably haven't uninstalled it either...You may have "disabled" it in the Internet Options/Security settings, but I doubt if you've uninstalled it.

In order to use Thunderbird, or any other POP3 account to view your Yahoo Mail account, you must purchase their "Yahoo Mail Plus" package. It allows POP3/SMTP access through secondary e-mail clients..If you don't purchase the "Yahoo Mail Plus" account, you'll need to stay with their standard webmail account.

Hope this helps.

Grif Re: Yahoo and Mozilla
Jan 25, 2005 5:42PM PST

Grif: Yahoo will work with Mozilla and it's variations, but on the standard free Yahoo! mail, I can read email, but only send in plain text. I like to use various fonts and colors so I stay with IE. I do not get any problems with IE because I prevent them by using appropriate security measures. I have "fixed" a few friends computers and am always amazed at how many people just blindly use IE or any other browser without any regard for security and I find so much malware, spyware, browser hijackers etc it's not even funny! Thanks for a great forum CnetHappy

Chuck, Grif is giving good advice.

I use the full Mozilla 1.7.3 for both Windows and Linux
with my SBC/Yahoo. If you set it up correctly there are no problems. In fact, I prefer Mozilla Mail since I can
recover mail from all 7 of my mail boxes(5 Yahoo and 2
from my web site) without having to login and out on every account like you have to in Yahoo. Good luck and post back if have more questions. chuck
