I get a number of zip files, which automatically end up in Winzip's clutches and my 45 -day trial evaluation period is over and I'm not buying it. How can I get these files(the latest is .rar) files opened using free software and how can I get these downloaded files to automatically drop into that software?

Compressed archives...

This is actually a question for the PC Utilities forum, but I'll answer it here:

1.) You simply uninstall Winzip and install/use whichever free application you prefer. Personally, I recommend ExtractNow if you're simply looking to extract, and not create, compressed archives. 7-Zip is another free option that offers more functionality.

2.) It depends on the program you choose to use; most offer some setting/preference option.

-> Compressed archives are rarely "locked" to a specific program.

Hope this helps,
John

I've wiped WinZip out completely!
