bdefrin,
The Blu-Ray player will send surround signal if connected directly to the receiver. The optical out in the television will not allow passthrough of a 5.1 surround audio except for the tuner.
Does that help?

This may be really basic, but I think if I ask for advice rather than experiment with cables it might save some time. I have a LN46B750, and by the way, it's fabulous, and I want to get DVD sound from an external stereo amp and speakers. A Bluray player will be connected to the TV via HDMI cable. Should I use the audio out from the Bluray to the amp or audio out from the TV to the amp? Many thanks in advance.
