hooking up surround sound to samsung tv

Hey all, I just bought a samsung UN40EH6000FXZA tv and am having some issues hooking up my surround sound. The surround sound was working fine with my previous tv, but I can't get the sound to work with this one. I connected the red/white/yellow rca cables and then tried the digital optical audio cable and still nothing. I'm not sure what the deal is. Starting to wonder if there is something wrong with tv. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Remember that almost all sound out of the TV is STEREO.

I don't think we need to repeat why but the only exception is Over The Air (OTA.) All others might be stereo.

Have you read why this is yet?
