Hook a Comcast HD DV-R to a Panasonic DVD Recorder

Jun 1, 2009 6:41AM PDT

Panasonic DVD Recorder ES-15

Trying to burn DVDs from COMCAST DV-R machine

Hooked up SVideo from DV-R to DVD - Get pic fine

Tech installing DVR told me to come out of the orange RCA type plug out of the Comcast DVR, split the cord into the DVD rca audio "in" jacks on the DVD

This is not working ...no sound at all

Only other option from DV-R is optical ....but there is no optical "in" on the DVD

Can I just run an RF cable from the DVR to the DVD??

thx Jw

Your tv is hooked to what connections on the DVR?

What other output connections does the DVR have beside s-video? As for the coax connection goes, it probably will work when recording in coming signal in real time but I doubt it will record what's on the dvr harddrive.

You are out of luck;

You just cannot do "two things" at the same time. The only audio out that you can use is also being use by the component connection (TV). I think the design of the dvr is as intended (my guess).

Here's a thought,

your TV have a atsc/QAM built-in tuner? If yes, connect the coax to it and see if that will work. Then the dvr can be use for the Panasonic.

Little Digging But Yikes!!!

Hey I did a little digging around and found you can get Optical and/or SPDIF digital audio to analog (L/R) converters but they are expensive.

You can search on SPDIF to Analog Converter and see if you can find cheaper ones, the cheapest I found was on eBay for $69 at this link:

Description: GEFEN DIGITAL COAXIAL TO ANALOG AUDIO CONVERTER OPTICAL

http://cgi.ebay.com/GEFEN-DIGITAL-COAXIAL-TO-ANALOG-AUDIO-CONVERTER-OPTICAL_W0QQitemZ110236910928QQcategoryZ61395QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3907.m263QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%252BC%252BIA%26itu%3DFICS%252BUFI%252BUA%252BIA%252BUCI%26otn%3D15%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D54#bigim

Perhaps more searching you will find ones at lower prices...

Note: I am not a seller at eBay, just trying to point the poster to a solution

Won't work as you describe...

The Orange connection on the DVR is a digital audio out and unless you have a digital audio in jack (orange) on your panasonic it will not work to hook to the analog audio jacks (red & white).

If you are getting video from the S-Video then that is not a part of the problem.

If your DVD recorder has no optical or digital audio in then you need to find another path, you might check your TV and see if it has a regular audio out, or your Receiver (HT).

I am not sure you can get a digital to analog audio converter buy you might try a search but in the end that is what you need to do.

Look for any other device your DVR is hooked to that you can grab analog audio from (red/white rca, sometimes red/black), that is what you need.

DVR to DVD Recording

S connection is Video only. S Vid to S Vid is OK. Then you need L&R Audio Out to L&R Audio In.

DV-R to DVD

Additional to my previous post. The Audio out cables can be removed from the TV to make the DVD then need to be put back. Or you can use a Y-connector for the Audio L&R to TV and Recorder if you want to leave connected.

use the red and white AUDO cable to the DVD recorder

the one orange plug is probably digital audio, you want the ole fashion L & R white & red audio out to audio in on the dvd recorder, keep the SVHS cable for the video.
