Homeschool mom needs help!

Hello everyone. I could use some guidance. After buying my nine year old daughter an ASUS hybrid EEE Pc (combo laptop and tablet) and setting up a home network connecting my iPhone, her Netbook, wii system and an iPad I decided to ditch the desktop and get an ASUS windows home server and a laptop to replace the desktop. Here's the caveat. I really use my iPhone to it's fullest and eventually want to get an iPad to use bumbing around the house. I would like to purchase a laptop that is a desktop replacement. I'm leaning toward ASUS but need to know "how much" computer I should consider.
I'm a heavy computer user between homeschooling, building websites and switching between several applications while many are open. Leaning toward more cloud storage, digital library(getting rid of CDs and DVDs ) and going paperless. I don't want to break the bank but I plan on keeping Pc for at least 3 to 5 years, technology willing.

CPU speed, RAM, HD, ?
ASUS has a lot of options available and it's a bit overwhelming.
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.
Blessings, another overwhelmed mom.
