Home wireless network help, please!

Feb 23, 2006 1:01PM PST

Hi, I've got a Linksys wireless router/access point that works well except when I'm in my family room which is across the house & in the basement. Signal strength there sucks. Is there anything I can do or buy (short of replacing the router) that can boost the signal (a repeater of some sort maybe)? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

P.S. - I love Veronica.

Try a wireless repeater.

Or, maybe you can get a high gain antenna to help some (the Circuit City in my town sells one for the Linksys routers), but the repeater is probably your best bet. I suffer from the same problem, and my wireless router isn't all that far away, just on the other side of the house.

You could also buy a Cantenna, or even build your own if you search around the web.

Hope this helps,

Two ideas

One, put some aluminum foil behind the antenna so that it reflects the signal toward the other end of the house. Sound ssilly but it worked wonders in a house I used to liv ein.

Two, move the access point. Moving to the center of the hous eis ideal, but not always practical. However, the configuration of the house makes a difference. I had my access point in the front of the house which worked well everywhere except the office on the other side. When I moved the access point on the wall just outside the office it covered the whole property really well.

If you have the cash, use a repeater

I am a big fan on the liksys repeater and its dead easy to set up. If you are to go down the road of adding extra coverage using a repeater, I would try to buy the same brand repeater as your existing kit as it does help with the setting up sometimes.

Here's a Weekend Project Video that shows how easy it is to set up:
